Children water race for ending water and sanitation deprivations


EWP campaign yet again, was able to organise a Children Water Race on 29th May 2009 at the heart spot of Kathmandu, Mahabaudha. The event was jointly organised by NGO Forum for Urban Water and Sanitation, Nepal Red Cross Society, Guthi, Annapurna Higher Secondary School and EWP Campaign in Nepal.On the occasion of Sithi Nakha (a festival for cleaning traditional water sources), this event aimed to raise awareness of the people on conserving the traditional water sources.


The race was glorified by the presence of Honourable Constitution Assembly Member Mr. Nabindra Raj Joshi. The Honourable CA Member expressed his solidarity in the campaign for assuring safe drinking water to citizens of the country. He handed over the certificate of appreciation to all the children who participated in the race. He shared need for conservation of water sources for combating water crisis. He committed that he would raise the voice at the Constitution Assembly and other relevant political platforms for converting this moral issue into a political concern.

The race was inaugurated by Ms. Ceridwen Johnson, Communications Manager, Freshwater Action Network (FAN). The gathering of campaigners in the spot encouraged children to perform better and together with Nepalese crowd there was also presence of Mr. Gabbita Mruthyunjaya Sastry, FAN South Asia (FANSA) Coordinator and Mr. Yakub Hossain, FANSA Coordinator Bangladesh to globalize the encouraging crowd.


The representative shared that the festival to be celebrated as National Sanitation and Water Conservation Day. Children are the most acute sufferers from poor sanitation and inadequate water. Therefore, they could be the best advocate to ensure for the quality water and proper sanitation for all.


The winners and participants of the race were felicitated by the prizes and appreciation for their effort. There were altogether 70 school children who participated in the Water Race. The event encouraged for the continuous efforts to gain the success. Thus, the campaigners were also inspired for their utmost attempt to end water and sanitation deprivations.
